Thoughts on Testing

One of the most surprising things I’ve discovered in moving to high school from elementary is the increased amount of formal testing. There are state tests, end-of-course tests, diagnostic tests, placement tests, and standardized tests. Included in testing are the school day SAT, ACT, PSAT, and PERT (students are now provided an opportunity to take these college entrance exams once during the school day free of charge).

Two thoughts on testing:

1. Testing has become more about evaluating teachers and schools as opposed to determining the academic level of students to drive instruction and

2. Testing format typically does not match the instructional design (differentiated instruction in the class, but everyone is tested the same way).

What are your thoughts on testing?

Back and at the Library!

Happy Saturday! I’m finally back with a new post, location, and position! I’m now in central Florida, working at a high school in the Media Center! One of the most surprising and delightful things I’ve discovered about being a Media Specialist is that I’m still an instructor. Media Specialists are teachers too! My pupils are not only the students at my school, but I assist and help the faculty with planning, teaching ideas, and resources. I absolutely love being in the library and encouraging students to read.

Now more than ever, students need to be able to find themselves in books.
